Brief Updates from Myanmar

"Another Long Retreat is over. Thank for your prayers and support," wrote Fr Wardi Saputra (IDO) last Nov 30. Out of the eight primi making retreat, two have already gone home and decided not to continue.

Fr Boboy Silerio (PHI) accompanies the novices at night and works with the St Aloysius English Language Institute (SAGELI) during the day. On December 3, Fr Paul Dass (MAS), who will be the next SAG director, made a brief visit.

New Director for the Language Institute

Fr Paul Dass (MAS) will be coming to Taunggyi, to be the Director of Gonzaga Language Institute. Paul will begin his work around the beginning of January 2010. While waiting for his arrival, Ms Irene Ho continues to do both jobs as Director and Principal. When Paul arrives, and has his introduction to the ministry, he will take over the position of Director, and Irene will continue as Principal.

A visit to Myanmarese and Thai Scholastics in Yogya

During the JCEAO meeting in Yogyakarta, and the 150th Anniversary of the Indonesian Province,Fr Paul Pollock, Superior of Thailand and Myanmar had several great visits with the scholastics. They are doing very very well, and Fr Paul was impressed how much of their Bahasa he could understand. In August they will all go to Jakarta, and then the new academic year there will begin.(Contributor: Fr Paul Pollock)

Yogya welcomes Myanmarese and Thai scholastics

Indonesian Province happily welcomed six Myanmarese and four Thai scholastics at Robert Bellarmine College Sanata Dharma University Yogyakarta. They arrived in Jakarta on May 16 and spent their morning visiting some Jesuit formation houses there. They left for Yogyakarta in the afternoon of the same day. On May 18, they began their Indonesian language courses at Sanata Dharma Language Center.

Moving forward for Myanmarese and Thai scholastics

Sch Wilbert Mireh (MYN) has been approved for theology, and will be continuing his theological studies at Loyola School of Theology, Manila, Philippines. He will be a member of the Arrupe International Residence. Congratulations to Wilbert for his two years of teaching at Xavier School, Truk, Micronesia. Wilbert will begin theology at the beginning of June, 2009. Sch Francis Htjaru (MYN) is assigned to Jesuit Refugee Service, Mae Hong Sohn, Thailand.

Fr Jose Hildy "Totet" Banaynal (PHI) made his Final Vows on December 12 at the parish church in Battambang to Fr Gabriel Je, Delegate of the Korea Provincial (Cambodia Mission), with Fr Jojo Magadia, Provincial of the Philippines, beside him.

Christmas in Myanmar

Fr Wardi Saputra (IDO) wrote last December 23, "Second half of December turns the quiet Payaphyu into holy noisy compound. Various groups keep coming to share their joy of the Christmas season by singing Christmas carols. The novices did the same for three nights. Myself, Titus (Tin Maung) and Stephen (Seng Ja) had Christmas break by sightseeing around Pyin Oo Lwin, Mandalay and Bagan on December 16–21.

Myanmar November 2008 News

Last November 10, Ms Irene Ho, Director of St Aloysius Gonzaga English Language Institute, sent word from Kuala Lumpur to Fr Paul Pollock (TAI) that her operation, and insertion of a pacemaker, was successful.

On November 25, Irene was re-admitted to the hospital, to investigate swelling due to internal bleeding. There is the possibility that she may have to have another operation if the doctors cannot stop the bleeding. She is not out of the forest yet. Please keep her in your prayers.
