More than 200 people from St Canice’s Parish in Sydney turned out for this year’s annual dinner to raise money for people in Timor Leste.
Special guests at this year’s celebration at Bondi Surf Lifesaving Club on October 29 were East Timorese scholastics Dino Sarmento and João dos Santos, who are currently studying at Jesuit Theological College in Melbourne.
The two scholastics entertained the crowd with talks about their home as well as musical performances.

“We send only the best men to the mission!” said Fr Mark Raper SJ in his homily during the missioning mass presided over by Philippine Provincial Superior Fr Jojo Magadia SJ. The mass was held at the Arrupe International Residence (AIR) on May 13, 2011.
Although Fr Mark was recalling the words of his former superior decades ago, the statement remained valid in the missioning of Fr Lester Maramara SJ from the Philippine Province to Timor Leste.
Telling the Story of Hope in Timor-Leste
Casa de Produção Audiovisual (CPA) is the only non-profit production house in Timor-Leste that regularly produces multimedia products in Tetun. Its director Amelia Hapsari provides an update.
Each morning, the staff of CPA gather in a circle to pray. They are writers, cameramen, editors and animators who have been trained in CPA since the dawn of the young country. The task on their shoulders is both heavy and humble. They share hope through storytelling.
Jesuit Education in Timor Leste
The Society of Jesus has administered Colégio de São José at the request of the Bishop of Dili since 1993. However, CSJ is and continues to be a school of the Diocese of Dili. Direction of CSJ will revert to the Dili Diocese at the end of 2011, but our work in education in Timor Leste will continue.
Fr Mark Raper SJ has issued a statement in Timor Leste regarding the Society’s position on Jesuit education in the country.

A dinner was wonderfully prepared by Fr Roy Ragas (PHI) last February 21 in Dili. The region of East Timor had two reasons to celebrate. First was to welcome Fr Mark Raper who just arrived that afternoon. Second, February 21 marked his 50th year in the Society; the Region felt honored that Fr Mark chose to be with them on that day.
