Irish Jesuit Fr. Francis “Frank” G. Doyle died peacefully in Manila on St Patrick’s Day, 17th March 2011, after a short illness following a severe stroke in February.
Fr Frank was born in Dublin in 1931, joined the Society in 1949, and was ordained as a priest at Wah Yan College in Kowloon, Hong Kong in 1963. He spent many years in Hong Kong, and also in Malaysia and Singapore before returning to Ireland.
On December 11, 2010 Fr General appointed Fr Rene Repole (PHI) as Rector of Arrupe International Residence. He took office last February 9. Fr Rene used to be the rector of St John Vianney Seminary in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. He took over Fr Koichi Matsumoto (JPN), who now continues to recover from his illness.
Arrupe International Residence opened the academic year 2010-2011 on a high note, as usual. Members, both old and new, trudged in one by one towards the end of May: there were the old members returning home, from summer pastoral exposure programs abroad, from home visits; there were new comers – novices from in East Timor and Myanmar joining the Juniorate program; a Junior from Sri Lanka region coming for studies in Philosophy; others for theological studies having completed regency; and new staff members. By the beginning of June, we were a full-house.
April 15, 2010. On the recommendation of the Board of Trustees of EAPI, the Jesuit Conference of Asia Pacific appoints Fr Arthur Leger SJ as the next director of the East Asian Pastoral Institute (EAPI), commencing June 01, 2010. Fr Leger succeeds Fr Jeyaraj Rasiah SJ, who leaves Manila on May 19 and will assume his new role Provincial of Sri Lanka on May 24.

In the January 2007 meeting of the Major Superiors, it was decided to create a governing body for Arrupe International Residence (AIR). The group, made up of Frs Adolfo Nicolás, John Mace, Daniel Huang, Louis Gendron, Paul Pollock, and Koichi Matsumoto met last July 18 at the JCEAO office. The main purpose of the meeting was to produce a meaningful and fluid modus operandi for the body.
Sch John Lester O. Tajon (PHI) sent this write-up last July 19. On June 1, during his homily, Fr. Tom O’Gorman aptly described the current atmosphere of Arrupe International Residence in two words, "arrival and departure".
