  • November 3–14: Visitation with Arrupe scholastics. Some of these days will also be spent on visitations with EAPI Jesuit community and staff.
  • November 14–16: Talk to the theologians at the LHS triduum; presides at their renovation mass in the morning of November 17.
  • November 17–25: Travels to Phnom Penh in the afternoon of Nov. 17 for the Regional Meeting of the Jesuits in Cambodia on November 18–21. Proceeds to Nagasaki, Japan for the Beatification of Martyrs on November 24.

The Jesuits in the seven Provinces and five regions of the Assistancy number 1686. The Province of Indonesia is the largest with 350 members followed by the Philippines with 305, Japan with 234, China with 187, Australia with 154 and Vietnam with 125.

Ms Wendy Lui Wan Sze and studentsJesuit Service Cambodia bid farewell to Ms Wendy Lui Wan Sze of the Hong Kong Catholic Lay Missionary Association, who worked with the Catholic Church Student Centre (Phnom Penh) from 2004-2006, and then with Banteay Prieb, the school for the handicapped run by Jesuit Service Cambodia, from 2006-2008. Wendy will be missed by the many students of the Student Center and Banteay Prieb whom she had touched with her caring and nursing. We wish her well as she moves on to her studies at the East Asian Pastoral Institute in Manila in 2009.

Comings and Goings

Fr Horie Setsuro (JPN) departed East Timor on September 22. His first stop is Japan to visit Jesuits, family and friends. He will then move on to Brazil for a new assignment. Fr Filomeno departed for his sabbatical at Oxford on September 29. Australian Province Novice Alan Wong arrived on September 10 for his long experiment, living and working with our three East Timorese novices. He will return to Australia on October 27.

Jem Guevara’s Priestly Ordination & Thanksgiving Mass

Last August 15, Rev. Jerome Emmanuel Guevara was ordained to the priesthood in the Oratory of St. Ignatius de Loyola, Loyola House of Studies (LHS), Philippines. The ordination started at 2p.m. and was presided by the Arch. of Cagayan de Oro, His Eminence Antonio J. Ledesma, DD. Since Jem was a former Arrupean, the Arrupe International Residence (AIR) Community came to witness the momentous event. Chinese delegates from Taiwan also came to join the celebration. After the mass, a simple refreshment followed at the Richie Fernando Covered Court near LHS.

Broderick Pabillo, D.D., the Auxiliary Bishop of Manila ordained nine Jesuits to the Diaconate last September 13, in the Church of the Gesu of the Ateneo de Manila University campus, Loyola Heights, Quezon City, Philippines. Ongoing Courses

Currently, two ongoing programs, started last June 29th and ending on December 12, are in full swing with their respective modules and activities. The Sabbatical Pilgrimage have 15 participants and the Pastoral Renewal Program (PRP) has 54, for a combined total of 69 participants. This current batch is composed of 35 priests, 29 religious sisters, and 5 lay people. Indeed, EAPI has been blessed with a good number of those who want to renew and update themselves to be more effective in working in God’s Kingdom.

AJCU-EAO Holds 2008 General Assembly

The Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in East Asia and Oceania (AJCU-EAO) held its 2008 General Assembly last August 26-28 at the Grand Cikarang Hotel, Jababeka Raya, Cikarang Industrial Estate in Indonesia. Members from the Philippines, Korea, Japan and, of course, the host schools from Indonesia came together for the annual meeting.
